My sister just sent me this. She lives in Queens. She got to her car to go to work this morning and was greeted with this. No evidence of what car hit it and no witnesses. How to proceed?

Call insurance and see what they have to say.

NYPD probably has 5784785 more important things to deal with. :P

Welcome to New York. She’s the third car that guy bumped into while attempting to parallel park this week and there are about a million other people who can’t park as well. If she really wants to file a police report and let her insurance go up, she can, but that’s about all that’s going to happen and the repair might be under her deductible anyway.

That’s about all she can do at this point. It looks almost like that bumper cover could snap back into that white piece.
The good news is that it looks like it’d require little body work and mostly just a replacement bumper cover and tail light.

I know police may not do a report if she moved the car. Not sure how the laws are up there. If she has uninsured motorist coverage, she would need to call and set up a claim so it can be filed under that.

This reminds me: this happened to my neighbor’s car, but with much more damage. The wheel decided it wanted to #stanceworks. He got it repaired. But then recently a tree branch fell on the car.

If you file a police report the insurance company might take it a bit more seriosly I think.

Yep, but still good to have the hit and run report on file when dealing with the insurer I think.

Yeah - they’ll take it seriously enough to bump up your payments. This is the kind of thing you repair as cheaply as possible because it’s just going to happen again street parking in New York.

Yeah I was thinking it’s not too bad, damage wise. Could’ve been a lot worse.

This. My fiancé’s Versa’s bumpers are all torn up from when she worked in Whitestone for a year. Thankfully it’s only a Versa. She got her plates stolen one day too. NYPD sucks ass for this sort of stuff... it happens so often they can’t do anything about it.
TL;DR, yea, get used to living in NYC.

Depends on her coverage but due to the location of the damage she’ll probably luck out and the insurance will file it as a no fault accident and her rates won’t go up.
When a taxi driver did a hit and run on my car it was considered no fault and my rates did not go up.

Not sure what the system is in the U.S. but in the U.K. you’d phone the police, register the incident, get a ‘crime number’ (get as many pictures as possible of the car, where it was in relation to other cars and it’s position on the road) to then phone the insurance with the details of what happened and put the ball in motion to get the vehicle repaired. If there are any CCTV cameras in the area, notify the insurance where they are and the insurance company can approach the companies and/or individuals to release any camera footage that may have caught the incident.
Not sure what it is over there but over here it’s an offence to not stop and make every ‘reasonable effort’ to track the owner or leave details. If the owner of the damaged car can’t be found then they are to leave details and go to the nearest police station to report it and then the police can contact the owner or will have it on record for when the owner of the damaged car phones the police to report the incident.
I hope it gets sorted quickly and her no claims is unaffected and her premiums don’t rise from it, some companies are known to raise the premium because the car was in an incident even if the car wasn’t the cause.

I figured she moved it due to getting to work. I know down here in MS once a vehicle has moved the PD won’t do a report. It may be different up there though so she could check into it. I mentioned uninsured motorist, but it may would fall under comprehensive coverage up there. Either way, if shs has those she just needs to call in to set up a claim.

^^ This.
I once called the cops because my car caught a stray .44 bullet that made a crowd scatter. The cops were too busy laughing at me to take it seriously.
That said, it went through a $194 part, so I wasn’t even mad...just happy the bullet hit an unnecessary part of my car and not a person. I covered up the bullet hole with a decal and went on with my life. :)

Yup, I lived in Queens for a while and this pretty much shows how people treat one another. My first response to that text would have been “welcome to New York.”
